Hello stranger! April 11, 2007

I know, I know…I’ve been a slacker when it comes to updating my blog recently.  In the past several weeks I’ve spent very few days at home.  A trip to Reno/Tahoe area to visit my sister, which included a lovely run at the Kirkwood ski resort as well as some good “working out” time spent on the treadmill and elliptical (I love those things!).  It’s always fun to run in new places, see some new scenery and die from the lack of oxygen in the air!  Who knew that running at 7,800 feet would be so hard!  Okay, well I knew it would be harder, but man, I was sore for DAYS after a little 6 mile run!

After that trip, I headed out to Washington DC to see the cherry blossom trees in full bloom.  The trees weren’t the only thing blooming, my new relationship was as well!  😉  Besides the miles and miles of walking to see the sights, Chris took me on a run along some of the trails there in DC.

Next stop was central Texas, and my friend Mark came along with me on a 4 mile run in the dark (it was 6 AM), cold (40 degrees) and wet (it was drizzling).

So although I haven’t been getting in my daily training runs, and even fewer long training runs, I’m still feeling fairly good about the upcoming marathon which takes place in 18 days.  Eeek.  Only 18 days?!?

Luckily my new shoes (Saucony ProGrid Hurricane 9) are broken in and feeling quite fine and I’m not having any problems with the top of my left foot anymore.

18 days and counting down!

Extensor tendonitis March 13, 2007

Posted by RegiVizz in Injury, Running, Shoes.

The 25K went well, but I think I may have laced my left shoe too tightly.  The result: extensor tendonitis?  Maybe?  I’m keeping ice on my foot all day, so we’ll see if that helps.

Yesterday after work, I changed into my running clothes and laced up my shoes…or tried to lace up my shoes.  With a not-so-dull pain on the top of my foot, I knew I wouldn’t be running far.  First though, I stopped at The Runner to see what they thought.  All prepared to buy some new shoes, they sent me away with nothing!  Instead he told me to try and run (I did 2 miles) to see if that would help.  He also said to ice it and take some ibuprofen, so that I did (and am doing).

No run today, no run tomorrow and I’ll try a short run on Thursday.  Maybe the tongue of my shoe is too thin?  Seems like it might be much thinner than when I bought them.

I’ve got about 250 miles on these, so maybe it’s time to start breaking in a new pair?  I think I may stop and buy some this afternoon…I mean…if I’m not running, I’ve got nothing better to do right?  🙂

My outfit December 14, 2006

Did I really just type that title?  Geez…what am I turning into…a GIRL?  🙂

This afternoon I’m running in a $200 outfit (shoes included).  Yes.  Me.  Moi.  The chick who won’t even contemplate spending HALF that much on a “normal” outfit (shoes included!).  I’m hoping that the Nike Dri-fit shirt and capris have wings on them to help me fly.  I should expect that at the very least, eh?

I’ve always been a cotton t-shirt and shorts kind of a runner.  Nothing fancy for me, no way.  I have found, however, that cotton gets wet.  And cold.  And uncomfortable.

What thinkest thou?  Am I crazy for buying “running clothes”?

Asics: 17 miles this week, 33 miles total

Well, I returned “The Beasts” last night for some Asics Gel-Nimbus VIII’s…….Apparently my foot, though flat as suspected, has grown accustomed to neutral gate shoes, so these fit the bill nicely.  I cruised over to UCSD with my buddy Justin and we ran a quick mile before heading off to play racquetball.  The shoes felt fine, though they did not propel me forward at rocket speed as I had hoped.  hmph.  =)

So now I have decent shoes, am running more comfortably and am starting to get increasingly more serious about this 10k coming up in May.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am Damon and I am not (NOT) a runner.  At this point in my running career I do not in any way enjoy running.  I struggle tooth and nail.  I pant.  I collapse.  I nearly kill myself trying to get into shape.  But daggnabbit I set a goal to run a 10k with the beautiful Regina and I plan on doing it if its the last thing I do.

Regina, on the other hand, IS a runner.  She is the person who started this whole thing for me.  So when i’m running around the local track nearly dead and drowning in persperation, it is usually her I blame….

But when I cross that finish line in Oklahoma City in May after my first 10k, it will be her I credit.

My Beauty? The Beast. Grr. December 4, 2006

I spent $130 last Thursday on Brook’s “The Beast” running shoe.  First of all, a running shoe labeled “The Beast” seems kinda strange.  But they are big and they are wide and they seemed to be a perfect fit for my brick like feet.  So I rushed home, threw on my jogging shorts and drove over to the high school where the band was working on their field show for the following weekend.  I did some extra long stretches cause I planned on giving these suckers a nice run for their money….

At about 1/2 a mile I started to feel it.  My feet were burning.  It felt like the entire bottom of my foot was getting hot and sore and painful.

At about 3/4 of a mile I started to REALLY feel it.  My right arch was getting blistered and feeling VERY pained.

At 1 mile I stopped running.  I could no longer take a step.  My feet were dead.

I was angry, hurting and $130 dollars poorer.

I know, I know it’s not a waste to get new shoes, but as this is my second new pair in about as many weeks, it’s a little frustrating.  Saturday I bought these…

and took them for a test run (2 miles) on Saturday and a 7 miler on Sunday.  I’m pleased with them!

Groan.  You would think that having 4 days of vacation would help, not hinder the running!  Unfortunately, the top of my left foot is still giving me fits so I skipped my normal Thursday run and just did a short little one on Saturday morning.  After eating a ton for Thanksgiving I felt so much better after my run.  Amazingly better!

I guess I’m going to have to give up on this new pair of shoes and find another pair since I think they are to blame for my foot hurting.    😦

Nikes: 3 miles last run, 13 miles total

New Shoes Please? November 17, 2006

Posted by Damon in Shoes.

I am looking for some new running shoes.  Some nice ones.  Currently I’m using some cheap ones I bought to get things started, but I’m realizing the value of some good, comfy and LIGHT shoes.

I have a foot that is near wide as it is long.  I know that New Balance shoes have variable widths, and have had success with their shoes in the past….

Any other suggestions?
