Mushing January 18, 2007

It warmed up to a toasty 37 degrees today, so before the sun sinks too much farther beyond the horizon I’m going to head out to the lake.  I’ll probably be running on the grass, in the mud/slush/ice but oh! doesn’t that sound invigorating?  Wind chill is 32 right now, so it’ll be a nice cool one!

I’m really looking forward to this run…HAVE to get one in before the next winter mix hits us on Friday/Saturday/Sunday!

Run Happy!

For those of you who keep up with my “regular” blog, you know that the weather here has not been very conducive to running.  I don’t have a gym membership, so running the streets and doing my own workouts at home are my only options.

The ice storm cancelled my Saturday long run.  If it was snow, I’d be all for running out at the lake, on the grass, buuuut, it’s ice.  Frozen solid, even over the grass (believe me…I headed out there yesterday to be sure).  It’ll be Thursday before I can get a run in.  :-(   Oh well…I’ve got a few weeks built into my marathon training schedule for just this thing.  Hopefully things will be back on track Thursday!

Speed training… January 12, 2007

Became strength training yesterday.

Deciding to try the out-and-back method of racing yourself back and beating your “out” time, I set off at my normal pace.  No big deal.  Until I turned around to start back.  With the wind blowing against me I could barely move forward.  I think if I’d have tried to stand on one foot I’d have been blown down!  This is how bad it was:  the wind was causing massive amounts of tears to form in my eyes, and most of those were blowing right off of my face.  The rest were causing some nice (okay…quit reading if you think all girls are pristine and perfect) runny snot to form.  This too was blowing off of my face.  Which, in a way was nice because I didn’t get my shirt-sleeves dirty!

Anyway, I felt like I was running up-hill, and added a good minute to each mile for my “back”.  So much for speed training, maybe next Monday!

Asics: 18 miles this week, 90 total

Energy Gels January 10, 2007

Now that my runs are getting to be 10 miles and over, I’m debating on the use of energy gels.  Gu, Accel Gel, Clif Shot, Jelly Belly Sports Beans…one of those.  Does anybody have any recommendations?  Advice?

I’d imagine I should make sure they are compatible with my sensitive stomach so I’ll use them on my shorter runs to begin with….and that there’s about the only thing I know to do!  Any and all help (brands, flavors, timing etc.) will be appreciated!

What would be the best time/way to work on speed?

Last night I ran the first mile a minute faster than my average pace, but then my next mile ended up a minute slower than my average.  The third mile was average.  Is this any way to build up speed?   Mostly the first mile was to work off some hurt and frustration but hey, maybe it’ll help my speed in the long run?  I was hoping to gauge my success by how I felt at the end (hoping to feel like I had worked harder) but due to circumstances (crying a bit) I couldn’t really tell.

What do you more experienced runners say?  Do you speed up your short runs?

Asics: 10 miles this week, 82 total.

I’m so excited to find that OKC has a training group for the April 29th marathon.  I’ll be running with them every Saturday morning at 8 as long as I’m here in town!

Although I’ve done 10 mile runs without the benefit of either water or camaraderie, I was dreading the longer runs by myself.  A local running shop “The Runner” is coordinating water stops for our Saturday morning runs and they anticipate between 40 and 100 people to show up (based on the previous years).  This will definitely be a help and encouragement for the long runs.

I had a nice 7 miler on Saturday, averaging a little under 9.5 minutes per mile.

In Full Swing January 5, 2007

It’s taken a little longer after the holidays to get back into the swing of things regarding my running.  However, I ran a nice 4 miles yesterday with some of my best times ever, beating my average for 4 by 30 seconds per mile!  It helped that I was able to pass a couple of ladies that were running…that always feels good!  :-)

Much like Regina, I’ll be running my first marathon, with her support (that means get ready to drag me).  I started a cleanse/fast this week but so far it hasn’t affected my runs.  45 min on Mon and Tues.  I’m feeling stronger on my runs which may have something to do with the New Year, new goals, renewed energy…what ever it is I like it.  A positive attitude can make a big difference!  Keep pounding the pavement.

Welcome to 2007.  This will be the year I run my first marathon.  This will be the year I become a more consistent runner.  This will be a great year!

As I expected I was a bit of a slacker over the New Year, missing both Monday and Tuesday’s runs.  However I got my 10 miler in on Saturday!  I must admit, however, that I was quite excited about the thought of having someone(s) to run with, but circumstances were such that I ended up running alone.  It was a good solid run, and the little yip-yip dog that chased my heels for a half mile probably helped my time some!

Asics: 68 miles total

Saturday was a nine-miler.  It was a little windy, but I felt GREAT for the first 7.  The last two I struggled with a bit, but all in all it was a wonderful run.  Because it was such a great run, I was really looking forward to my run yesterday (Monday) because I knew it would be a simple 3 miles.  Was I ever wrong!

I decided to run my dirt trails instead of running out at the lake so I laced up my Rykas and away I went.  I forgot how much harder it is to do the hills and the sharp turns.  It definately slowed me down and shortened my stride.  I did, however, appreciate being out in the trees and listening to the birds fussing, the squirrells darting to and fro and the wind blowing the leaves!

Asics: 13 so far this week, 50 total

Rykas: 400 plus, +3
