I’m a broken man! May 9, 2007

I recently ( with Regina’s help ) finished my first marathon. No one told me they were hazardous to your health! As my body slowly recovers, I wonder when do you start running again? How much and how often do you train for maintainence? Anyone know of a downhill Saturday marathon coming up this fall?
Oh yeah, and on runnersworld, I found this:
week 1: active rest
week 2: light cross-training, light weight lifting
week 3: return to running, slowly and on soft surfaces
week 4: start rebuilding a base, ease back into it
I swam (with a float buoy) on Tuesday following the marathon and started running again Thursday for about 2-3 miles. By week 3, I’m back on my 20-30 mile. Of course, listen to your body.
I run 5-10-5 every week to keep my running base. Occasionally, I’ll add an extra 5-10 miles just for the fun of it. With a pretty good base, you’ll be able to jump back into marathon training without putting your body into shock of starting out again.
Downhill marathon is a lot harder on the body especially the quads, I believe. I heard Chicago is very flat but it’s sold out.

Now you can always brag about completing a marathon! I dream of that day…Way to go!
Congratulations – I haven’t quite figured out how to deal with after effect of my first marathon: I can’t sustain the training I did for the marathon, it was too time and energy consuming. However, I am frustrated knowing that my fitness levels will drop significiantly because I am not running 5 times a week. I need to come up with a compromise….!
Crazy enough you will do it again! I did 3 NYC’s in a row and one in copenhagen…best accomplish. GOOD JOB
