My New Running Track! December 6, 2006

Found a great track to run on!  Lately its been tough because of the time change.  I have been getting off work when its nearly dark, so its been harder to get out and go running. (I’m a “light” runner.  har har.)  So anyways, I found this great padded track over at UCSD.  The nice thing is, even though its not that close to where I live, it IS close to a couple of semi-running friends of mine!

Last night I ran a quick (oh, okay. It was kinda slow) mile and then headed over to Bri’s house to show her some pictures of a recent friend reunion.  Get this: this girl just ran in the Death Valley Marathon last weekend.  She placed 2nd of all women.  Of ALL women!!!  She also qualified for the Boston Marathon (she ran with just above an 8 minute per mile pace for the entire race!!!)  So i’m pretty much amazed by her.  And here I am near death running a single mile while she is running beside me cheering me on.  Rather humbling.

Well, I returned “The Beasts” last night for some Asics Gel-Nimbus VIII’s…….Apparently my foot, though flat as suspected, has grown accustomed to neutral gate shoes, so these fit the bill nicely.  I cruised over to UCSD with my buddy Justin and we ran a quick mile before heading off to play racquetball.  The shoes felt fine, though they did not propel me forward at rocket speed as I had hoped.  hmph.  =)

So now I have decent shoes, am running more comfortably and am starting to get increasingly more serious about this 10k coming up in May.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am Damon and I am not (NOT) a runner.  At this point in my running career I do not in any way enjoy running.  I struggle tooth and nail.  I pant.  I collapse.  I nearly kill myself trying to get into shape.  But daggnabbit I set a goal to run a 10k with the beautiful Regina and I plan on doing it if its the last thing I do.

Regina, on the other hand, IS a runner.  She is the person who started this whole thing for me.  So when i’m running around the local track nearly dead and drowning in persperation, it is usually her I blame….

But when I cross that finish line in Oklahoma City in May after my first 10k, it will be her I credit.

My Beauty? The Beast. Grr. December 4, 2006

I spent $130 last Thursday on Brook’s “The Beast” running shoe.  First of all, a running shoe labeled “The Beast” seems kinda strange.  But they are big and they are wide and they seemed to be a perfect fit for my brick like feet.  So I rushed home, threw on my jogging shorts and drove over to the high school where the band was working on their field show for the following weekend.  I did some extra long stretches cause I planned on giving these suckers a nice run for their money….

At about 1/2 a mile I started to feel it.  My feet were burning.  It felt like the entire bottom of my foot was getting hot and sore and painful.

At about 3/4 of a mile I started to REALLY feel it.  My right arch was getting blistered and feeling VERY pained.

At 1 mile I stopped running.  I could no longer take a step.  My feet were dead.

I was angry, hurting and $130 dollars poorer.

hmph.

I know, I know it’s not a waste to get new shoes, but as this is my second new pair in about as many weeks, it’s a little frustrating.  Saturday I bought these…

and took them for a test run (2 miles) on Saturday and a 7 miler on Sunday.  I’m pleased with them!
